9 months ago, I was challenged by Foto-Nature for a photographic expedition to Picos da Europa National park (PENP) in Spain . Heard a lot about these mountains. Not that many photographies of the area, though…
PENP was the first national park of Spain, and has its roots tide back to 1915 when it was born as the “Parque Nacional de la Montaña de Covadonga”. Its 65.000 Ha are spread through the communities of Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla-León.
I was there for the first time 2 years ago, when I drove with my beautiful family, by the sea side from Lisbon to Santander. At the park we have briefly visited Covadonga and its lagoons. What a feeling… to achieve those lakes, that thin air in a lovely sunshine day. Having the chance to see the eagles flying majestically from above… that’s true, we were above the eagles. A rare opportunity, a rare sight. Being with the family prevented me from exploring, from photographing. But the seed was planted. I’ve recurrently dreamed of going back to those mountains to photograph. Imagine how I felt when that email reached my inbox. I was speechless. Going back with a fantastic team. The answer was immediate: count me in.
Now, 9 months later, I’m here at my laptop writing my checklist as the month of June literally turns the calendar. It is now 00:06, June 1st.
In this series of posts I will try to share the preparation and the actual expedition journal.
